After some touch and go experimenting I've managed to work out enough PERL to get my blog half working. I now have the details on the blog page being taken directly from the database. It's not quite 100% how I want it but it's certainly a good start for now. Hopefully some further work tomorrow will get it working how I want to display entries and then I can start coding up the interface. Go me!
